Body Benefits of Yoga

I know this is another article or post about yoga benefits. I hope you can enjoy yoga while obtaining the benefits! I must say there is scientific proof that yoga increases energy, heals the body and mind or helps lose weight! I am a 500-hour certified yoga instructor with trauma training, licensed nutrition and a chiropractic assistant license that has spent 30 years in the physical sciences and taught thousands of people to honor their body as it the only one you have! Have fun and enjoy exercise, hiking biking the gym or yoga and sleep better too.

With all of the conflicts and stress in today’s world, there is no better time to find an alternative to combat these negative energies. Millions of people across the world have turned to yoga not as just another exercise routine, but much more. If you start doing sun salutations by standing and bending  routine, the warrior pose series, and meditate on a mat, you will find a calm and physically rewarding space. Leaving your mat out is encouragement for me to practice daily. At 20-45 minutes per day, your mind and body will change and you can decide to add classes from there. My youtube.com/EileenFruithandler has free beginner yoga, so try it!

What is yoga? A 5,000+ year-old Indian body of knowledge, and mind-body medicine that integrates an individual’s physical, mental, and spiritual connections.  While there are many types of yoga, one of the most popular styles is Hatha yoga, pranayamas (breath-controlled exercises), followed by a series of asanas (yoga postures), ending with savasana (resting). I  studied BKS Iyengar, assisting students to have the correct postures. I love it!

YOGA AND DEPRESSION

Yoga can lead to significant increases in serotonin levels and used in the treatment of depression. A 2012 study showed people who practiced yoga recovered from stress without quickly. Studies show yoga offers tremendous benefits in the area of stress relief. The  hormones that are associated with a physical and mental sense of well-being have increased also.  Stress is often called the “silent killer” and yoga actually reduces stress. Try ten minutes to begin, work up to 30 min a day and you will see.

Yoga might be considered a good alternative to common cardiovascular exercise, like walking and biking. It is now included in many cardiac rehabilitation programs, including my own! Yoga also thins the blood which can decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke caused by blood clots. Twist yoga poses like my favorite,  Half Lord of the Fishes, and  Triangle Pose not only help relieve lower back pain and aid digestion but also pump your internal organs increasing oxygenated blood, while the inverted Downward Facing Dog encourage blood flow from the legs and pelvis back to the heart and then lungs where it gets fresh oxygenation.

For people of EVERY age, maintaining muscle mass can protect you from arthritis, osteoporosis, and back pain. Yoga helps loosen the muscles, keeps fluids and connective tissues around your bones and joints healthy helping to reduce pain.

YOGA CAN INCREASE SELF-CONFIDENCE

Yoga develops a quiet mind, a feeling of well-being and relaxation that leads to increased productivity, concentration, and positive thoughts which lead to an improved self-confidence. I was surprised to learn that physiologically, yoga actually inhibits the posterior or sympathetic area of the hypothalamus in the brain which increases your ability to deal with stress!

The breathing component of yoga allows a deep connection with your inner self.

Even the poses, like holding your head high, opening your heart and lungs, and looking “inward”, have an immediate positive impact on self-confidence! When you’re at peace, you’re happy and you can live your best life!

YOGA REDUCES INSOMNIA

Yoga’s ability to increase relaxation and induce a balanced mental state was studied to evaluate its effect on sleep quality and yoga offers a place, time and activity to stop and improve our mindfulness. This mindfulness can make you aware of how food tastes, smells, and eating less because you are not distracted or stressed (emotional eating).
