Four Realms of Existence

The Four Realms of Existence are biological neurobiological cognitive and conscious - during yoga you can experience one or all of them!

Neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux proposes a framework of human existence consisting of four nested and entwined realms:

  • Biological Realm: This is the foundational realm, encompassing all living things and the fundamental processes that make life possible.

  • Neurobiological Realm: Building upon the biological, this realm is characterized by the presence of a nervous system, allowing for faster and more precise control of the body. Most animals fall into this category.

  • Cognitive Realm: Within the neurobiological, some organisms develop the capacity to create internal representations of the world around them, using these "mental models" to guide their behavior. This is the cognitive realm.

  • Conscious Realm: The highest level in LeDoux's framework, this realm involves having inner experiences and thoughts about the world, allowing for a subjective Understanding of life and our existence in and around us.

Love and peace always,
