Meditation.

It sounds easy like a taking a nap. Lay there, breathe and relax. Svasana. Lying down after yoga. Close your eyes, roll them to the back of your mind and envision your dreams. Inhale your non-thoughts, exhale through slightly parted lips without thinking. I ring the Tibetan bowl reverberate sounds like heaven in my heart and it lets me focus, relieve stress, anxiety and return after meditation of leaving the earth for some time.

And, who isn’t wandering now? Wait, who is talking in my head while I’m meditating? It is another deeper voice, whispering your inner thoughts, staying UN-plugged enough to manifest yourself into heaven and earth 🌍 and healing blessings for your life! I find grateful moments in the non-thoughts of my heart ❤️ with so much joy from God or a higher maybe lower or parallel universe. Thank yourself for the minutes of silence and grace that no one else has enough of giving you more to give others. Thanks 🙏 Namaste.

Gatorade Patches

Brilliant creation by the company who brought us maximum hydration and electrolytes we now all love, a patch to determine your sweat patterns! Skeptical at first, I put on the patch for a hot and dry Colorado day, sweating up the mountain whilst drinking Gatorade. We went to a 5 mile Hike with steep inclines and shady trees, open rocks and views for miles at the crest. The patch worked! Gatorade assisted us all with energy and hydrating the whole way.

I tried the new pod of Gatorade in their special bottle for the pod system. It’s better than morning coffee as it drips into your blood stream showing the sweat and salt loss pattern while you exercise. App for Gatirade GXSweat Patch allows you to scan the patch showing your specific results. Let's get physical!

Namaste,
Eileen 🙏

Your Own Yoga

You can be your own yoga teacher and meditate as well. How? Here are simple instructions just for you to be your own yoga teacher with peace and love.

  1. Get on a mat!

  2. Breath. Inhale a few seconds, exhale a few seconds. Close your mouth and notice your breath in and out of your nose ... “ujayii” victorious breathing.

  3. Sit in child pose with knees out, sits bones on your heels and head down toward the earth. Be you.

  4. Lean forward to a cat position and inhale, arch your back like a cat, exhale to cow asana, belly hanging.

  5. Down Dog - lift knees off mat, press into toes, and stretch your arms while hanging your head and take 5 slow, deep breaths. Close your eyes and visualize!

  6. Lift your eyes, walk your feet to your hands, folding position and repeat “Appreciating Appreciates”!

  7. Inhale and lift arms to the sky. Make or set an intention with your eyes closed. Give it to the universe, look up.

  8. Up Dog - Swan dive arms to the earth, head to knees and exhale. Palms flat on the ground, straighten one leg behind you and the other to a “plank” or push up position. Lower down with the top of feet pushing into the floor, straighten your arms and breathe. Great job!

  9. Inhale and lift your hips, exhale and straighten your legs and arms to Down Dog again. Inhale /Exhale to a seated position: Lotus, cross-legged on the mat.

  10. Inhale, straighten legs and arms, exhale while lowering down flat with palms up to Svasana, resting pose and Meditate at least several minutes……Namaste!

Will you…repel in the Canyons?

Find the beauty and peace in nature and you will be grateful for the world around you. Visiting Moab, Utah, I was enlightened by the challenge and sport of canyoneering, with two experienced guides and professionals who supplied equipment and excellent instruction. I had to dig deep for climbing boulders and repelling the vertical canyons that are some of the hardest to conquer in the world. The result and accomplishment in the end was worth the jumps!

You have to be strong in both body, spirit and mind to overcome any obstacles in life. This was a true test and metaphor for most of the vertical heights and leaps, enduring weather, sand, ripped pants and jackets while scrambling down canyons, but it was definitely worth it. Here is a list of a few major Moab and Utah must-see on your “do-it-soon” list. As a side but important note, my daughter said “yes” to her now-fiance in the Arches National Park! The engagement photo was also worth the hike.

IMG_1591.jpeg

Moab’s National Parks & State Park offers great family hikes suitable for tots as well as teens. Guided hikes, interpretive programs and the Junior Ranger Program add additional fun for kids. Check out the fun things your family can do together.

  • Arches National Park – Arches is a great family park. From the Visitor Center with its interpretive exhibits, orientation video and animal statues at the Visitor Center, to the rock formations, the Park will delight kids as well as adults, and hiking trails provide many opportunities for children to get out of the car and explore the arches up close. Special pics posted later…

  • Canyonlands National Park – Both Island in the Sky and the Needles have several short trails great for children. At the Island, kids enjoy peeking through Mesa Arch and climbing the back of the whale at Whale Rock. Pics are below!

  • Dead Horse Point State Park – The legend of Dead Horse Point in itself puts young imaginations to work as they explore this amazing park. Truly worth the drive and plenty of hotels and camping 🏕.

  • Natural Bridges National monument - three majestic natural bridges to view or hike and experience the grandeur.

The Path of Least Resistance

From Embrace Your Wobbles: Wisdom from the yoga mat

Priscilla Shumway

“Yoga is not a work-out, it is a work-in. And this is the point of spiritual practice; to make us teachable; to open up our hearts and focus our awareness so that we can know what we already know and be who we already are.” -Rolf Gates

In the New Year as we begin our practice again and again, we will face challenging poses. Along with these poses we may experience wobbles: those physical and mental challenges that are an unavoidable part of our yoga practice and life itself. Can we become aware of an ongoing inner dialogue of multiple voices, each offering an opinion on how we should proceedwhen we encounter these wobbles? Here is what you might hear:

“Hey, take it easy. You don’t have to prove anything. This is your practice. Take a break in child’s pose.”

“Oh, no. No breaks. Keep up the hard work. If you keep up these classes, you will build strength and not have these pesky shoulders and elbow problems.”

Hey, slow down. Don’t hurt yourself. Is it your ego that is pushing you? Are you trying to keep up with the younger students to prove a point?”

“No, no! You always take easy classes. You know you have to build bone mass and muscle as you get older. These harder classes are good for you. The more down dogs and planks you do, the stronger you will get, and your shoulder problems will go away.”

If I hurt myself I won’t want to come to class. I don’t have to work so hard. I can get just as much out of the gentle classes.”

All of us have multiple voices inside us. They are part of the ongoing narrative of the mind. Each voice expresses a specific opinion regarding how we should respond to a wobble (the challenge at the moment). Sylvia Boorstein, a teacher in the Buddhist tradition, suggests we name these voices. She refers to that first voice in my ongoing dialogue as the grandmother’s voice, the voice suggesting, “Take it easy. Don’t push. In fact, why not sit down and have a cup of tea!” Wisdom is understanding in every moment which voice to listen to and which to ignore. our inner dialog often vacillates between taking the path of least resistance (the grandmother’s voice) versus the path that embraces the challenge. The issue of trying to discern which voice to listen to at any given moment is the lesson here.

How many voices do you hear when you experience a wobble? Which voice do you listen to, and which do you ignore?

Try to think of a wobble as a call to action, but there are usually multiple options for responding to any wobble. How do I decide which is appropriate for me at that moment, on that day?

FROM THOUGHT TO ACTION: DISCERNING WHICH PATH TO TAKE

In yoga, as in life, we are often faced with deciding which path or action to take from among several options that may vary in their degree of challenge. For example, which yoga class to take (easy versus hard) or the decision to use (or not use) external support during a challenging pose. According to Wikipedia, in physics, the path of least resistance is defined as the “physical pathway that provides the least resistance to forward motion by a given object or entity, among a set of alternative paths.” The path of least resistance represents the easiest course of action. It is the action requiring the least effort and resulting in the least upheaval, unpleasantness, or drama. According to numerous psychologists, humans are hardwired to take the easy route. More often, we choose to rely on experience and continue with what has worked for us before or what is most pleasant and less painful. Perhaps the love of gentle yoga classes reflects this hardwired impulse to take the easy route. While taking the path of least resistance may be our default inclination, it is crucial in life, both on and off the mat, to pause and consider if this is the right path.

Choosing the path of least resistance may determine how we deal with a friend with whom we disagree. By not challenging them and stating our truth to avoid unpleasantness, we may be taking the path of least resistance. Staying quiet instead of confronting an issue may be taking the path of least resistance. But it is only by facing our inner resistance, ignoring our grandmother’s voice, and engaging in a challenge that we grow and move forward. Wobbles exist more often on the path of greatest resistance.

“When you are challenged, you are asked to become more than you were. That means creating new perspectives, acquiring new skills, and pushing boundaries. In other words, you have to expand your understanding to be able to overcome the obstacles facing you.” (Thomas Oppong, author and columnist.)

And so, on the mat and off, when faced with life’s challenges and wobbles, it is vital that we pause and ask ourselves, which path should I take? Is this a time to take the path of least resistance or accept the more challenging path? Or is there a Middle Way?

TAKING THE MIDDLE WAY

Buddha describes the Middle Way as the path of moderation, the way between the extremes of self-indulgence and self- denial. Is there a Middle Way beyond the path of least resistance and the path of the most resistance? When faced with wobbles both on and off the yoga mat, can I find a Middle Way, neither avoiding all nor accepting all challenges? I believe I can.

Here are some Middle Way intentions to consider:

• To notice but not judge wobbles—being aware of what is difficult or challenging in the present moment.

• When encountering a wobble (either physical or mental), to notice the inclination to take the path of least resistance and to pause and consider alternative paths.

• To challenge yourself both on and off the yoga mat to engage in the challenge, not always taking the path of least resistance.

• On your yoga mat, practice a few down dogs and planks in every gentle class to build strength and endurance. In more challenging classes, allow yourself not to complete all the vinyasas if your body tells you to rest.

• To be grateful to your body for allowing you to experience wobbles, for they remind you that you are still showing up to practice.

To experience wobbles in life both on and off the yoga mat is to realize we are still learning, still growing—and this is extremely important. Each day, each breath brings with it another opportunity to experience the gifts and wobbles of life!

During these unprecedented times, it has been lonely and feeling alone is not fair to anyone.

Law of Attraction Reset

I love a great story about manifesting what you want, people who re-invent themselves to even help others, and sourcing it through the universe. I am proof of the law of attraction and so is my friend, Trishna Patnaik. She wrote the below, with a few of my edits. Trishna Patnaik has a BSc, Life Sciences and MBA, Marketing, by qualification but an artist by choice. Trishna was once a corporate professional, however, she created a life well-lived that helps others with more meaning and passion: painting. Trishna is now a full-time professional painter based in Mumbai, an Art Therapist, and a Healer.

“Be the energy you want to attract.”

WHAT IS THE LAW OF ATTRACTION? The law of attraction is the idea that whatever you hold in your mind on a consistent basis is exactly what you will experience in your life. In short, what you focus on, you attract. If you put negative energy into the world, you’ll feel like you’re living under a cloud. But if you practice gratitude and mindfulness and put positive energy into the world, you’ll attract positivity in return. Many people think of romantic relationships as a default answer to the question, “What is the law of attraction?” In truth, romance is only one piece of the puzzle. The concept of attracting what you want is vital to success in every area of your life. It can take you to the peak state in your business, your health, and your personal and professional relationships.

2. HOW DOES THE LAW OF ATTRACTION WORK? The law of attraction is a metaphysical force akin to the force of gravity. Just as a gravitational pull exists between the sun and planets to hold them in continuous orbit, so does the law of attraction exist between a person’s beliefs and behaviors. If you believe you are capable of achieving your dreams, you’re inspired to pursue those dreams; you believe you’re incapable, there will be no impetus to inspire you to action. The law of attraction acts as a magnetic force between your dreams and the actions you must take to realize them.

3. WHAT ARE THE 6 LAWS OF ATTRACTION? The law of attraction is one concept comprised of seven parts. When you put these components into practice every day, you develop a set of habits that puts the law of attraction into motion. An UNWAVERING DESIRE The law of attraction works by focusing your awareness on your deepest values and goals. If you waver in what you want, it’s easy to become distracted from pursuing it. Setting your sights on a goal you really want is your first step in learning how to use the law of attraction. A CONCEPTUALIZATION/IMAGINATION Like gravity, there’s nothing you can do to overcome the law of attraction. So why not embrace it as fact? When you remove doubt from the picture, you’re able to focus on attaining what you really want. An AFFIRMATION Practicing affirmation cements the outcome you want. By constantly reaffirming yourself and your goal, you’re able to sharpen your focus. Working on CONFIDENT FOCUS Developing focus is critical for implementing the law of attraction. As you cultivate your focus, your desires become more tangible.

Belief supports every choice you make, from your relationships to your career. When you truly believe something is possible, nothing will get in your way of pursuing it. When it comes to learning how to use the law of attraction, your mindset is everything. Having an attitude of gratitude puts you in a place of greater self-awareness. You’re able to see your circumstances more clearly, including how the law of attraction may have already achieved outcomes you hadn’t noticed.

4. DOES THE LAW OF ATTRACTION REALLY WORK? There is real science that backs up the law of attraction. People with a growth mindset – that is, people who believe in their ability to change and learn new things – accomplish way more than those with a rather fixed mindset. Another scientific principle, known as “mirror neurons,” occurs when we observe someone doing something and our brains “mirror” them so that we feel like we are also doing the same thing. If we surround ourselves with successful people, our brains will mirror them, cultivating positive habits and success in our own lives. Brain imaging has also shown that the areas of the brain involved in intention and action are very closely connected. When you focus on something continuously, something magical happens – and that magical something is your intentions that activate your brain to achieve that thing. There is strong evidence that the scientific answer to, “What is the law of attraction, and does it work?” is a definitive and loud “YES!”

5. IS THERE A METHOD FOR LEARNING HOW TO USE THE LAW OF ATTRACTION? You can use the law of attraction to create a breakthrough in many areas of your life. Do you want to manifest your dream job, create the body you want, turn a failure into success or change your mindset and stop negative thinking? It’s all about getting laser-focused on what you really want, surrounding yourself with positive energy that will come back to you and follow these steps: IDENTIFY YOUR LIMITING BELIEFS - Beliefs are things you are certain about, whether about yourself, other people or the world. Limiting beliefs are the stories we tell ourselves: “I’ve always been shy” or “I’ll never learn to love working out.” They come from past experiences and results, your environment and the knowledge you’ve picked up over the years – and they affect every aspect of your life. Identifying them is the first step to changing your story and mastering how to use the law of attraction.

REWRITE YOUR STORY or as Hamilton, the musical, asks, “Who will write your story?'“ We will act consistently with our view of who we truly are, whether that view is accurate or not. What we tell ourselves is what we believe. Changing your self-talk is essential to learning how to use the law of attraction – and also one of the hardest parts. In order to attract positive results you must not only speak and act outwardly in a way that manifests your goals but also must stop negative patterns and truly believe in yourself.

SHIFT YOUR FOCUS

Where focus goes, energy flows. Focus on the lessons you learned, focus on all the potential your future holds. Most of all; focus on your next big success. You are in charge of your emotions and your decisions. What do you want most? What gives you purpose and hunger? Put all of your energy toward that one thing. The difference between peak performance and poor performance is not intelligence or ability; most often it’s the state that your mind and body are in. But how can you make sure your body and mind operate in peak state? You can start with goal visualization, meditation and gratitude. Visualizing your goals for 10 minutes each morning sets a positive and empowering tone for your day. Meditation can increase your mindfulness and help you find your center and focus your thoughts. And practicing gratitude helps you live in the moment and radiate positivity.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUCCESS

This is the most important answer to “What is the law of attraction?” It’s who you associate with. The concept of mirror neurons backs up this concept, but successful people have known it for centuries. Proximity is power. If you want to have an extraordinary life, surround yourself with people who make you better. Get out of your dead-end job, one-sided relationships and negative friendships. Elevate your standards. Find a mentor or a mastermind group so you can share ideas with other ambitious people. Attend seminars and workshops with others who want to do better, be better and create the life of their dreams.

6. What Principles shall one Observe When It Comes to The Law Of Attraction?

Free Will, your desires and manifestations must follow this principle. You can master the Law of Attraction and attract whatever you wish for, but if it violates somebody’s free will, it will not serve you well. Your Intentions vs. other people’s intentions, be aware that if your desire is in direct conflict with someone else’s stronger desire, the universe will respond accordingly. The Law of Attraction does not give you full and total control of your life, it simply states that like will attract like. Take the time to think deeply about all these ideas and see if they make sense to you both logically and emotionally. If you think long and hard enough you will come to the same conclusions that the great leaders of humanity’s past have all come to: that is, we create our own reality.

Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve. - Napoleon Hill

Trendy Fitness challenge

Challenge yourself to a new fitness plan! Just because gyms closed is No excuse to stop working on your health and well-being. As you wake up, stretch in bed and you'll yourself up to a sit up. Place one hand behind your head and pulse to the opposite side. Switch hands and pulse up and back seven-10 times. As you rise up, press your heels into the earth, and stretch your arms up to the sky; be able to balance and not tip forward. This is very important as we age so that equilibrium is the focus and we don't fall.

Use books or containers in place of weights. You can do reps for your biceps and triceps at home by curling your arms and raising books overhead for pull downs. Do not use anything too big or heavy. If you walk and like nature like me, you can find two equally sized rocks or branches and lift them as you walk. By adding new muscle groups you will see the change in a week or two. A few yoga poses near a tree or wall for support can make you feel at peace and strong. Stay mindful and be in the moment as well as grateful. Have fun!

Creative YOGA Hybrids to Switch it up!

Hi friends! The article is about 7 types of yoga from Health Perch, a digital magazine. Please follow them on social as well as click the highlighted blue links throughout the 7 creative yoga workouts below. Namaste!

As yoga has grown ever more popular, a variety of other physical practices have incorporated it into their repertoire. This has resulted in the rise of “hybrid” or “fusion” yoga classes, which meld yoga with other exercise styles and physical activities including acrobatics, CrossFit, dance, paddleboarding, and Pilates.

These hybrids can challenge the body in new ways and add a mindful component to otherwise more physical practices. They also help introduce more people to the practice of yoga, since it may be less intimidating for someone who has never set foot in a yoga studio to walk into a more comfortable exercise class.

At the same time, it’s important to note that hybrid yoga classes may blur the lines of what yoga actually is (or was meant to be). For this reason, critics have rightfully pointed out that fusion yoga may be culturally appropriative—meaning these classes incorporate only some aspects of yoga without honoring its origins. So as you consider different hybrid yoga classes, it’s a good idea to assess whether they’re respectful of the practice.

Ready to shake up your fitness or yoga routine and learn more about the world of fusion classes? Dip your toes into any of these creative (if not downright wacky) routines.

Aerial Yoga

Take to the air in this anti-gravity yoga practice, which involves practicing fairly standard yoga poses in a totally uncommon way. Instead of on your mat, you’ll be suspended from the ceiling in a silk hammock as you strike a series of poses.

Theoretically, practicing yoga in the air instead of on a mat can offer more freedom of movement, make it easier to modify poses to different ability levels, and challenge the core muscles as you work to remain stabilized. It also requires you to stay focused so you don’t slip out of the hammock—talk about being mindful!

Core Fusion Yoga

This aptly named hybrid is all about building core strength. You’ll do that through a combination of core-conditioning practices including the Lotte Berk Method, Pilates, interval cardio training, ab-sculpting exercises, and (of course) yoga. Some classes also incorporate light weights or dumbbells. It’s a challenging workout that will leave you feeling stronger, more balanced, and more centered.

Goat Yoga

You can’t make this stuff up. As the name implies, goat yoga (which is sometimes called caprine vinyasa) involves practicing yoga with goats. The idea is to build body awareness, enjoy yourself, and improve balance by practicing yoga postures both in the presence of goats and, sometimes, with those goats perched on top of your body.

For instance, the teacher might place a goat on top of your back while you practice cat-cow, thereby requiring you to become more attuned to your body and engage your core to help the goat stay stabilized. Even if you elect not to place a goat on your body, you’ll still get to enjoy the therapeutic effects inherent to spending time with animals. It’s just as bizarre (and cute!) as it sounds.

HIIT Yoga

HIIT stands for high intensity interval training, which combines fast bursts of intense exercises with short recovery periods so your heart rate stays high throughout the workout and you push your cardiovascular fitness to the limit.

Combining this practice with yoga typically involves striking challenging yoga poses during the recovery periods so your muscles continue to work in different ways. You’ll enjoy strength and balance conditioning from the yoga while upping your cardiovascular fitness with the HIIT. It’s a great way to work your body and your mind in a short period of time: Because they’re so intense, HIIT workouts usually last for 30 minutes or less.

Hip Hop Yoga

You may be accustomed to practicing yoga to the sounds of meditative music or simply the quiet whooshing of your own breath. Hip hop yoga blasts away the silence with—you guessed it!—hip hop music.

Because hip hop tends to be fast-paced, hip hop yoga classes are too. These aerobic, challenging classes are sometimes (but not always) practiced in a heated room. Aficionados of the practice claim that upbeat music helps them stay motivated and keeps them engaged during more challenging flows.

SUP Yoga

You know how challenging it can be to strike a tree pose or a three-legged down dog without losing your balance? Now picture striking those same poses on a paddleboard. On water. That is moving.

For those looking to seriously challenge their balance, build their core strength, and enjoy yoga from a unique vantage point, SUP yoga is the hybrid practice of your dreams. SUP stands for standup paddleboard, and that’s what you’ll be standing on while moving through a series of yoga poses that may range from mellow to hardcore.

Did we mention that you’ll be on the water? That’s the appeal of this class for many people, who seek out SUP yoga classes for their beautiful surroundings and the peacefulness that bobbing on the water can offer. Bonus: When you’re done sweating it out on your board, you can hop in the water for a post-class cool down.

Trampoline Yoga

If SUP yoga is a breeze for you, then it may be time to move on to the challenge of trampoline yoga. As the name suggests, this practice involves striking a variety of yoga poses (and practicing deep, even breaths) while balancing on top of a mini trampoline. Postures are likely to be punctuated with jumping sequences so you can keep your heart pumping.

Practitioners report that they enjoy greater freedom of movement and deeper stretches on the trampoline thanks to the continual bouncing motion. The key to this practice is not taking yourself too seriously—and therein lies one of its main benefits. It’s fun and playful and encourages the little kid in you to enjoy some time in the limelight, all of which can help relieve stress. Plus, research suggests that laughter really is the best medicine!

Conclusion

These creative yoga hybrids certainly aren’t the only fusion classes available, but they help give you a sense of just how many ways you can incorporate yoga into your wellness routine. From acrobats to goat lovers, there truly is a hybrid class for everyone. So go experiment until you’ve settled on the right yogic fusion for you!

Fourth month of Covid

As you celebrate the Fourth of July, or if you are staying safe at home and having a barbecue, you realize its the 4th month of Covid-19 stay-at-home quarantining!

Here's my plan: relax and enjoy the sun ☀️ with whatever food you have or can buy to create memories at home.

Wake up, do yoga, breathe on a mat or towel and do something fun! Make your own coffee, add some fruit and nuts to yogurt, grill any veggies and pour the drinks! The books and articles are waiting for you to be still and read. The kids are happy with a sprinkler or plastic pool and you can take advantage of playing games for the memories, practice yoga and exercise. Here's my article on yoga from Oprah Magazine on line!

Yoga and Meditation

As a trauma-experienced yoga teacher, Eileen thinks the best way to accept social distancing, keep your immune system and spirits equally high, and focus on new normals is to do yoga and meditation every day. Here's some tips!

  1. Find a place that is peaceful or wake up before the rest of your house! Place a mat, blanket, or rug beneath you Keep a towel and water bottle next to your space. I also add candles!

  2. In a standing position, the Sun Salutation is a few postures using your breath for a graceful flow. Inhale as you extend up, exhale as you fold your arms toward your feet. Bend your knees to touch, inhale and look up to lengthen and strengthen, exhale and flow down. Think of one thing your grateful for as your heart and lungs will benefit too.

  3. Sit on the floor, and do a seated flow like Janu Sirsana, crossing one foot into your thigh while stretching your arms and head toward your straight leg breathing a few minutes hovered over the straight leg, repeat on the other side.

  4. You can meditate either lying down or sitting. One technique is to look at the sky and see a healing light pointed at you. In Padmasana position or Svasana, Seated or lying down, scan your body from one side to the other. Close your eyes and feel the energy coming in when you inhale, open your mouth to exhale deeply.

  5. Repeat words like So Hum, which means I AM, FOLLOWED by a word of introspection, gratefulness, reflection for as many minutes as your mind and body allows you. NAMASTE.
