Creative YOGA Hybrids to Switch it up!

Hi friends! The article is about 7 types of yoga from Health Perch, a digital magazine. Please follow them on social as well as click the highlighted blue links throughout the 7 creative yoga workouts below. Namaste!

As yoga has grown ever more popular, a variety of other physical practices have incorporated it into their repertoire. This has resulted in the rise of “hybrid” or “fusion” yoga classes, which meld yoga with other exercise styles and physical activities including acrobatics, CrossFit, dance, paddleboarding, and Pilates.

These hybrids can challenge the body in new ways and add a mindful component to otherwise more physical practices. They also help introduce more people to the practice of yoga, since it may be less intimidating for someone who has never set foot in a yoga studio to walk into a more comfortable exercise class.

At the same time, it’s important to note that hybrid yoga classes may blur the lines of what yoga actually is (or was meant to be). For this reason, critics have rightfully pointed out that fusion yoga may be culturally appropriative—meaning these classes incorporate only some aspects of yoga without honoring its origins. So as you consider different hybrid yoga classes, it’s a good idea to assess whether they’re respectful of the practice.

Ready to shake up your fitness or yoga routine and learn more about the world of fusion classes? Dip your toes into any of these creative (if not downright wacky) routines.

Aerial Yoga

Take to the air in this anti-gravity yoga practice, which involves practicing fairly standard yoga poses in a totally uncommon way. Instead of on your mat, you’ll be suspended from the ceiling in a silk hammock as you strike a series of poses.

Theoretically, practicing yoga in the air instead of on a mat can offer more freedom of movement, make it easier to modify poses to different ability levels, and challenge the core muscles as you work to remain stabilized. It also requires you to stay focused so you don’t slip out of the hammock—talk about being mindful!

Core Fusion Yoga

This aptly named hybrid is all about building core strength. You’ll do that through a combination of core-conditioning practices including the Lotte Berk Method, Pilates, interval cardio training, ab-sculpting exercises, and (of course) yoga. Some classes also incorporate light weights or dumbbells. It’s a challenging workout that will leave you feeling stronger, more balanced, and more centered.

Goat Yoga

You can’t make this stuff up. As the name implies, goat yoga (which is sometimes called caprine vinyasa) involves practicing yoga with goats. The idea is to build body awareness, enjoy yourself, and improve balance by practicing yoga postures both in the presence of goats and, sometimes, with those goats perched on top of your body.

For instance, the teacher might place a goat on top of your back while you practice cat-cow, thereby requiring you to become more attuned to your body and engage your core to help the goat stay stabilized. Even if you elect not to place a goat on your body, you’ll still get to enjoy the therapeutic effects inherent to spending time with animals. It’s just as bizarre (and cute!) as it sounds.

HIIT Yoga

HIIT stands for high intensity interval training, which combines fast bursts of intense exercises with short recovery periods so your heart rate stays high throughout the workout and you push your cardiovascular fitness to the limit.

Combining this practice with yoga typically involves striking challenging yoga poses during the recovery periods so your muscles continue to work in different ways. You’ll enjoy strength and balance conditioning from the yoga while upping your cardiovascular fitness with the HIIT. It’s a great way to work your body and your mind in a short period of time: Because they’re so intense, HIIT workouts usually last for 30 minutes or less.

Hip Hop Yoga

You may be accustomed to practicing yoga to the sounds of meditative music or simply the quiet whooshing of your own breath. Hip hop yoga blasts away the silence with—you guessed it!—hip hop music.

Because hip hop tends to be fast-paced, hip hop yoga classes are too. These aerobic, challenging classes are sometimes (but not always) practiced in a heated room. Aficionados of the practice claim that upbeat music helps them stay motivated and keeps them engaged during more challenging flows.

SUP Yoga

You know how challenging it can be to strike a tree pose or a three-legged down dog without losing your balance? Now picture striking those same poses on a paddleboard. On water. That is moving.

For those looking to seriously challenge their balance, build their core strength, and enjoy yoga from a unique vantage point, SUP yoga is the hybrid practice of your dreams. SUP stands for standup paddleboard, and that’s what you’ll be standing on while moving through a series of yoga poses that may range from mellow to hardcore.

Did we mention that you’ll be on the water? That’s the appeal of this class for many people, who seek out SUP yoga classes for their beautiful surroundings and the peacefulness that bobbing on the water can offer. Bonus: When you’re done sweating it out on your board, you can hop in the water for a post-class cool down.

Trampoline Yoga

If SUP yoga is a breeze for you, then it may be time to move on to the challenge of trampoline yoga. As the name suggests, this practice involves striking a variety of yoga poses (and practicing deep, even breaths) while balancing on top of a mini trampoline. Postures are likely to be punctuated with jumping sequences so you can keep your heart pumping.

Practitioners report that they enjoy greater freedom of movement and deeper stretches on the trampoline thanks to the continual bouncing motion. The key to this practice is not taking yourself too seriously—and therein lies one of its main benefits. It’s fun and playful and encourages the little kid in you to enjoy some time in the limelight, all of which can help relieve stress. Plus, research suggests that laughter really is the best medicine!

Conclusion

These creative yoga hybrids certainly aren’t the only fusion classes available, but they help give you a sense of just how many ways you can incorporate yoga into your wellness routine. From acrobats to goat lovers, there truly is a hybrid class for everyone. So go experiment until you’ve settled on the right yogic fusion for you!

Fourth month of Covid

As you celebrate the Fourth of July, or if you are staying safe at home and having a barbecue, you realize its the 4th month of Covid-19 stay-at-home quarantining!

Here's my plan: relax and enjoy the sun ☀️ with whatever food you have or can buy to create memories at home.

Wake up, do yoga, breathe on a mat or towel and do something fun! Make your own coffee, add some fruit and nuts to yogurt, grill any veggies and pour the drinks! The books and articles are waiting for you to be still and read. The kids are happy with a sprinkler or plastic pool and you can take advantage of playing games for the memories, practice yoga and exercise. Here's my article on yoga from Oprah Magazine on line!

Yoga and Meditation

As a trauma-experienced yoga teacher, Eileen thinks the best way to accept social distancing, keep your immune system and spirits equally high, and focus on new normals is to do yoga and meditation every day. Here's some tips!

  1. Find a place that is peaceful or wake up before the rest of your house! Place a mat, blanket, or rug beneath you Keep a towel and water bottle next to your space. I also add candles!

  2. In a standing position, the Sun Salutation is a few postures using your breath for a graceful flow. Inhale as you extend up, exhale as you fold your arms toward your feet. Bend your knees to touch, inhale and look up to lengthen and strengthen, exhale and flow down. Think of one thing your grateful for as your heart and lungs will benefit too.

  3. Sit on the floor, and do a seated flow like Janu Sirsana, crossing one foot into your thigh while stretching your arms and head toward your straight leg breathing a few minutes hovered over the straight leg, repeat on the other side.

  4. You can meditate either lying down or sitting. One technique is to look at the sky and see a healing light pointed at you. In Padmasana position or Svasana, Seated or lying down, scan your body from one side to the other. Close your eyes and feel the energy coming in when you inhale, open your mouth to exhale deeply.

  5. Repeat words like So Hum, which means I AM, FOLLOWED by a word of introspection, gratefulness, reflection for as many minutes as your mind and body allows you. NAMASTE.

Post Covid-19 World

COULD the coronavirus sweeping around the world have a second illness following in its wake? Just as we expect another wave and high curve we can also expect to see an outbreak of post-viral fatigue and trauma-stress syndromes in some people who have not only had covid-19, but also stressed from the effects of social distancing and losing income, family and businesses.. As a yoga teacher specially trained for PTSD, Trauma conscious teaching, therapy and meditation, I am concerned that we need to take new measures for those who are suffering and will suffer beyond the outward symptoms. If you experience fatigue, depression, or suicidal thoughts during or AFTER social distancing, contact a doctor, friend or me!

Viral infections have previously been linked to problems with long-term fatigue symptoms. For example, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), which is also called myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), sometimes occurs after viral infections. People who have CFS experience extreme fatigue and a range of other symptoms, such as pain and sensitivity to light, but the condition is poorly understood.

Is it possible that the coronavirus could trigger PTSD, trauma or fatigue syndromes? There are hints from the related SARS virus that this may happen. After the SARS outbreak of 2002 to 2003, some people in Toronto, Canada, who were infected were recorded as experiencing fatigue, muscle weakness and sleep problems up to three years later.

We know that suicide increases after the one-year anniversary of post-trauma and a Harvard study showed health benefits of yoga reduce stress and anxiety. “Let it go” is what we are told, time will heal and “wait a year”. Not true, say, researchers and psychology therapists, letting go is a myth in a traumatized psyche. I know that yoga is not the cure, but it helps to meditate and look within for peace while looking forward to a positive future. Yoga has a range of health benefits, especially when combined with meditation techniques, like guided meditation and music or humming “OM”. The vibrations heal the most inner cells of the body, spirit, and with the world on the same healing while at home vibration today, May 8, 2020, we can spread positive energy to each other.

One technique is to look at the sky and see a healing light pointed at you. Sit in a cross-legged or Padmasana position, each leg crossed on the opposite thigh; Lotus pose is widely used in meditation. Close your eyes, scan your body from one side to the other while your eyes are gently closed. Feel the energy coming in when you inhale, and exhaling a light to the sky, universe, or higher power. Acknowledge your wandering thoughts. Repeat words like So Hum, which means I AM, FOLLOWED by a word or words of introspection, gratefulness, reflection and just be quiet for as many minutes as your mind and body allows you. NAMASTE.

Face Yoga Time

Spending days on facebook, facetime and facing the Stayhome pandemic due to Coronavirus social distancing orders has put a frown on many faces. The botox days are over for now, causing more wrinkles than ever! What can you do at home? Daily face yoga.

Try these steps for a natural lift, both physically and mentally. It will do for your face what yoga does for your body giving oxygen and a spiritual lift too.

  1. Sit down, close your eyes, inhale slowly and exhale slowly. Open your eyes. Widen your eyes and hold that expression while placing your hand on your forehead and pressing up. Press and hold for one minute and repeat 3 times. Inhale and exhale deeply then continue with #2.

  2. Look up and make a fish face, holding for 2 minutes to get a prominent jawline and strengthen muscles in face and neck. Inhale slowly, exhale deeply.

  3. Take a deep breathe in and puff your cheeks to strengthen the skin, exhale deeply and repeat. This tightens and reduce lines from your cheeks. HOLD and release several times.

  4. Eliminate crows feet around the eyes by opening eyes wide and gently pulling the skin back from the eyes to crown of head. Inhale slowly, Hold for one minute and exhale deeply, try to do this 5 times. Relax.

  5. Repeat the above daily! Namaste!

What's Your Dream?

I write this from the self-quarantine of Covid-19 Pandemic with all my heart. There are many D words in this story, like Dream, Diligence, and Dividends. What’s dividends got to do with it? Part of survival is love, health, and money. The stock market caused more panic, but hold onto stocks paying dividends as they always come back. It takes diligence to realize your dreams and you may think they’ve gone away, however, your dreams are still there and possible! Write your dreams down. What would you love to have? Write a gratitude journal and add your “Dream List” to it.

In the life that is changing for us now, we have to remember the promise of life to come. Discover that is is possible to be more alive than you have ever been. I started playing “pickleball” with my partner as no one is on the courts and we play with each other. Pickleball is like ping pong on a tennis court and so much fun that we forget about the world for a while. Walking or dancing alone to music is another favorite of mine and you can dance like nobody is watching!

Feel the deep sense of belonging, acceptance, support, and love from the world collectively changing the consciousness and style in which we all live. Change can be good and I believe we have to look at what will be learned from all of the Pandemic causes and results. Remember, write your gratitude and dream journal every day and I, for one, love you and support you. Namaste.

Wellness 2020! FOCUS ON YOU

I don’t have JUST one word for the new year, as many ask what’s your word to que you to focus on what you want. I have many words especially for this decade of double 20s: integrate, liberate, empower, wellness, money goals, abundance, blessed, grateful, vision and strategize. Send me a comment or email with your best inspiration and opt-in to life. If you need a que, start a gratitude diary and write in it as soon as you wake up with at least 5 things you’re grateful for. I believe it comes from the happiness within for your own motivation and inspiration.

What’s your “word” for the Roaring 20s? Focus. Choice. Challenge. Acceptance. Practice. Peace. Meditate. Jump! Just do it and remember that it takes failure to find success. Fear only stops you from trying while you need to listen to your inner voice! If the people doubting you had ever tried what you are trying, they wouldn’t be critical! The cheap seats have opinions but you are aiming for the private box! . You can choose your dreams and which ones if not all can or should be accomplished. What’s stopping you? Keep on moving forward. I use this especially when I’m teaching yoga, helping others to live their best lives and help others. Remember that your thoughts are reality. Dig deep and discover your self esteem as I know you will find bravery and Confidence to live your dreams. Dream bigger?
I know you can.

2020 Vision

It was beginning as an amazinG year…more than the current vision board. I am working from home now since March 8,, teaching yoga on Zoom and thank God my children are healthy! Last year, my son got engaged, to the perfect fiance, Molly and we experienced travel through Europe. For me, even true love was seen on my journey in 2019 and is getting real in 2020! I have “2020 Vision” for the decade and believe it will get better. It is crystal clear it’s awakened spirits on this earth and all around me. I will add room for error because it’s okay to mess up, light comes after darkness, rainbows after the storm and crossroads and unforeseen forks that will be my new teacher. I am working on new yoga routines, pickle all a d tennis! Walking, cooking and biking every day are the new norm. What's your new routine?

What is life teaching you? Did you make a vision board for 2020 that brings you to the edge and past your comfort zone? Here are my favorite words of third eye wisdom, please let me know yours in a message or comment or call me! I love you all and am here for you for anything! Cheers for you and yours! Here are some goals for 2020:

Put you first and be clear in this new decade to align with your vision, reconnect and focus on your purpose, make positive affirmations and spread kindness to  others to find their happiness. Think or write down your focus for 2020 is the perfect opportunity to begin a clean slate, attain new goals, create bigger dreams , forgive yourself and the past. Let's refocus our energy to love and live NOW, see the best in others, see the best in OUR SITUATION and we made to this far! Inhale the future and exhale the past. Each morning we are born again as Buddha said, what we do today matters most.

My biggest lesson was taught by Michelle Obama in that “When they go low, we go high”! The best learning lesson is to exercise restraint in the face of frustration; life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it and I will refocus my intentions in 2020 to surround myself with people who lift me higher, as Oprah said. I still haven't mastered my handstand yet but realize it doesn’t matter. The most important part is getting up each time I fall. For most of us, yoga is not about touching your toes, its about what you learn on the way down. Wala!

From the top to the bottom in December 24, 2019 of the Eiffel Tower I realized my 2020 goal: "The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old but building the new." - Socrates

Namaste!

Oprah Magazine Insider for the 4th year!!!

Like Josh Groban sings in All I Ask of You, my head is filled with talk of summertime, love, joy and huge gratefulness with the promise of a fourth year as a Brand Ambassador for O, The Oprah Magazine. I can’t wait to share another wonderful journey of the adventure of a lifetime with an amazing group of people that represent the best and hottest Magazine of the year! It was a dream come true the first year and I had no idea it would be the greatest moments of my life for four years! My first feature in the Oprah Magazine was for Trauma Yoga and helping empower women who were sexually and domestically violated. Since, I have helped many people with PTSD from suicide, school shootings, 211 Broward counsellors and Exhale to Inhale. I am on the Board of Connected Warriors as a Brand Ambassador, teaching free yoga to Veterans to help with PTSD and lower the suicide rate among our valued Veterans. Call me anytime, I would love to assist you or your group. There is a suicide hotline available for anyone too. 1-800-2738255.

I love Oprah’s Favorite Things and have been honored to receive them every holiday, it’s about the journey and not the destination, however some of the destinations have been so amazing I will never forget them! The joy and grace OPRAH BRINGS to a room and life is emotional, raw, and inspirational. I was chosen to model for Talbots on the Oprah and Gayle Girls’s Getaway Hal Holland America Line cruise to the Bahamas. When we were on the cruise, my BFF Sheri Turechek said her book club was reading Educated, by Tara Westover. Oprah interviewed Tara on the cruise and Sheri and I went crazy! She even got an autograph of her copy of Educated!! I was also chosen to interview Oprah, and asked her how she handled the social media comments that are not always so positive. I was having a rough time myself with the snarkey comments of people I knew! “When you gain oxygen, they lose oxygen, let them go.” Thanks O, I did. I watched Oprah christen the ship, two live shows in the LED lit from wall-to-wall theatre and shared drinks in the lounge with Gayle King. YOU have to believe big in your dreams even if no one else does. You are blessed and a child of God, and listen tot eh whispers that guide you to yur highest self and potential, and beyond!

I found the support and social media inspiration from the # OMagInsiders and partners that advertise and share their products for us to share our opinions are truthful, authentic and from our hearts! The cruise with Oprah and Gayle and the Oprah Magazine staff, repping the best clothes and being featured several times in the magazine have enhanced not only my life but the lives around me and even followers I don’t personally now but feel like I do! The connection from the Oprah Winfrey show to O, The Oprah Magazine and the future of Oprah2020 on tour is palpating in my heart and coming off my keyboard like an opera and as sweet as the sounds of Josh Groban. Perfecta! Thank you to all of you and my OMag family. Namaste.

YOU HEALING

You can do your own healing and ask others for help. If you drift off in your pain, it gets worse and not better. The truth is that you don’t have to feel alone. The biggest silent crisis in the world is loneliness, despair, and depression. Emotionally its the truth underneath our pain and in our hearts we know we’re not alone, but afraid to ask for help. There are centers, phone numbers and places for help. Call me! We know the past hurts and feel it when triggers result in sabotaging ourselves. We sabotage relationships. Families. Healing….which we need to do first in order to move forward and find inner peace and happiness. Patanjali said, “Yoga is inner work, not the outer circus.”

Depression, anger, and sadness are symptoms of stress and can be reduced with love, therapy yoga and acceptance. The Cup is half full, rather than half empty. Your cup can be full and runneth over, too. We are all groping for fundamental happiness and a fulfilled best life. Love, ethical behavior, respect and friends are what unite us. Optimism is a conscious effort of seeing your cup full or at the least, half full. Keep your mind and spirit grateful, eat healthy meals 3 times a day and grab a handful of nuts or fruit in between to keep the blood sugar and metabolism steady. This helps your mind and body become strong, rather than down and weak.

Blogtober is here!

When the fall leaves began changing colors, I booked a trip to see the golden Aspens in the Rockies. Now that the time is here for the trip, it will be snowing and 27 degrees (brrr) and lmportantly, most of the leaves will be falling! It’s still a spiritual month of renewal, change and how beautiful change can be.

Go buy that new winter coat and break out the boots, gloves and hats and show your seasonal colors! At least we have good food and holidays to think about. The next thought is a challenge to start a fitness and nutrition program so that you can keep your bathing suit figure for the holidays. I believe in being healthy not being a certain weight so don’t worry! Just take a walk, hike, or bike to the park and enjoy the scenery while being in the moment to find peace, love and good thoughts running through your cells if not running through the park! Take the kids, picnic and pets, too, they will appreciate it and have everlasting memories…..Enjoy it all!!

NYDJ Jeans

Have you ever had a pair of jeans you couldn’t throw away? Wore 10 times before you washed them because nothing else was that comfy or looked so good? I hope so! Like an old friend, even my new NYDJ jeans (#Ad)

are the best thing held against my body because they make me look and feel good as if I’m wearing yoga pants. My favorites are Marilyn Straight and Barbara Bootcut for my body. There are all sizes and shapes for women with curves, hips and thighs that you thought would never fit as well as be comfy together at the same time. Try a pair at most retail shops like Macy’s Bloomis Nordstrom or Saks. Let me know how they fit!! If I show up teaching yoga in them you so won’t be surprised!!!

Body Benefits of Yoga

I know this is another article or post about yoga benefits. I hope you can enjoy yoga while obtaining the benefits! I must say there is scientific proof that yoga increases energy, heals the body and mind or helps lose weight! I am a 500-hour certified yoga instructor with trauma training, licensed nutrition and a chiropractic assistant license that has spent 30 years in the physical sciences and taught thousands of people to honor their body as it the only one you have! Have fun and enjoy exercise, hiking biking the gym or yoga and sleep better too.

With all of the conflicts and stress in today’s world, there is no better time to find an alternative to combat these negative energies. Millions of people across the world have turned to yoga not as just another exercise routine, but much more. If you start doing sun salutations by standing and bending  routine, the warrior pose series, and meditate on a mat, you will find a calm and physically rewarding space. Leaving your mat out is encouragement for me to practice daily. At 20-45 minutes per day, your mind and body will change and you can decide to add classes from there. My youtube.com/EileenFruithandler has free beginner yoga, so try it!

What is yoga? A 5,000+ year-old Indian body of knowledge, and mind-body medicine that integrates an individual’s physical, mental, and spiritual connections.  While there are many types of yoga, one of the most popular styles is Hatha yoga, pranayamas (breath-controlled exercises), followed by a series of asanas (yoga postures), ending with savasana (resting). I  studied BKS Iyengar, assisting students to have the correct postures. I love it!

YOGA AND DEPRESSION

Yoga can lead to significant increases in serotonin levels and used in the treatment of depression. A 2012 study showed people who practiced yoga recovered from stress without quickly. Studies show yoga offers tremendous benefits in the area of stress relief. The  hormones that are associated with a physical and mental sense of well-being have increased also.  Stress is often called the “silent killer” and yoga actually reduces stress. Try ten minutes to begin, work up to 30 min a day and you will see.

Yoga might be considered a good alternative to common cardiovascular exercise, like walking and biking. It is now included in many cardiac rehabilitation programs, including my own! Yoga also thins the blood which can decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke caused by blood clots. Twist yoga poses like my favorite,  Half Lord of the Fishes, and  Triangle Pose not only help relieve lower back pain and aid digestion but also pump your internal organs increasing oxygenated blood, while the inverted Downward Facing Dog encourage blood flow from the legs and pelvis back to the heart and then lungs where it gets fresh oxygenation.

For people of EVERY age, maintaining muscle mass can protect you from arthritis, osteoporosis, and back pain. Yoga helps loosen the muscles, keeps fluids and connective tissues around your bones and joints healthy helping to reduce pain.

YOGA CAN INCREASE SELF-CONFIDENCE

Yoga develops a quiet mind, a feeling of well-being and relaxation that leads to increased productivity, concentration, and positive thoughts which lead to an improved self-confidence. I was surprised to learn that physiologically, yoga actually inhibits the posterior or sympathetic area of the hypothalamus in the brain which increases your ability to deal with stress!

The breathing component of yoga allows a deep connection with your inner self.

Even the poses, like holding your head high, opening your heart and lungs, and looking “inward”, have an immediate positive impact on self-confidence! When you’re at peace, you’re happy and you can live your best life!

YOGA REDUCES INSOMNIA

Yoga’s ability to increase relaxation and induce a balanced mental state was studied to evaluate its effect on sleep quality and yoga offers a place, time and activity to stop and improve our mindfulness. This mindfulness can make you aware of how food tastes, smells, and eating less because you are not distracted or stressed (emotional eating).
